Wolverhampton

The city is a metropolitan borough and unitary authority in the West Midlands with a population of around 250,000 according to the 2011 census. It is situated in the north of Staffordshire and North West of the Birmingham.  The city derived its name from Anglo-Saxon farm ‘Wulfrun’. During Industrial Revolution, the city grew strongly from staple town of the woollen trade to wealthy town of steel production, manufacturing of motorcycles and cars, coal mining and lock making. The economy of the city is largely dominated by the service sector and large aerospace industry. The city was also famous for the production of steel jewellery and japanned ware in the 18^th century.

The city purchased first fire engine in September 1703 after experiencing two major fires in the city which destroyed homes and left many people homeless in few days. The first long distance railway line was built in 1837 by Grand Junction Railway. The world’s largest trolleybus system was introduced in the city in 1923 and came to an end in 1967 with the conversion of the railway line from high-level station to electric operation. A number of Sikh community from India was settled during the period 1935-1975 and contributing approximately 9.1% of the city’s population.

The city is governed by Wolverhampton City Council and South Staffordshire District Council. Daily evening newspaper Express and Star has the largest circulation in the UK is also based in the city. The city is also the birthplace of notable people in the fields of Politics, sports, entertainment and commerce sector.

Education

The University of Wolverhampton is located in the city centre having more than 23,000 students is the highest education provider in the city. Wolverhampton Grammar School was founded by former Lord Mayor of London Sir Stephen Jenyns in 1512 is the oldest schools of the England. Professor Sir Arthur Harden who was awarded Nobel Prize in Chemistry completed his studies from Tettenhall College, one of the historic college of the city.
